Hear, Muse, for the beginning of this spring I shall renew my song once again. Set the gift of eloquent words free out of my breast! This very breast, that once teemed with the love of your beauty, has not yet sunk into deadly indifference. For sure it grows green and sprouts with the coming of the Goddess’ bountiful season, stirred by the festival that is the reawakening of her daughter. Raise your tender heads towards me, o the early flowers of Spring, your petals to me are as the rich folds of our Queen’s seemly dress. Swarm around me, o the melliferous bees of song –you are to my eyes same as the ever-youthful brides that play in the company of Kore before her terrible abduction.
Persephone is your name, ever-young divine one, from the mirth of your teenage play you were snatched away, only to rise again and embrace with your Mother every coming spring. The hazy colds of the winter are known to you, all wise you are in the horrible halls of Death. Of Death you know much, of the decay of the material. Yet verily by the virtue of your Mother you hold another science: that of unrestrained Life finding its way again! You, once miserable (yet so beautiful even in the land of the dead!) captive of Hades by the ruby seeds of pomegranate; you are at the same time a vanquisher of Death, you trample it under your kind feet to redeem us the gift of Eternal Life.
In the full glory of your thousand-coloured gown we see the promise of resurgence, Goddess, your eyes shine in reflection of the bright Sun since they once again see the light of day, in your flowing rich dark tresses of hair we delight in Nature, yet we see the slight reminder of Death in those dark locks of yours. Defeating torpor, you meet with your mother once again in this blessed hour. In highest words may you and the Mother be praised!
So hail to you, o Demeter, mother of harvest! Your daughter also, who knows both sorrow and joy.
Those who to you stay faithful shall forever abound in fruit both material and spiritual.
This song is dedicated to someone very dear, as promised. I strongly recommend everyone to listen Hallavedet by Tenhi after reading it.
